When You Need Shower Waterproofing
You need shower waterproofing when tiles are loose or hollow-sounding in a shower, when grout is cracked or missing, when there’s a musty smell in the bathroom that doesn’t go away after ventilation, when you see damp staining on the wall or ceiling adjacent to or below the shower, or when you’re retiling a shower and the original waterproofing was never done properly. In Gauteng’s older homes, many showers were tiled directly over cement plaster with no waterproofing layer at all.
Our Shower Waterproofing Process
For existing showers, we remove all tiles, scrape the substrate clean, and assess the condition of the screed or plaster. We apply a flexible cementitious or epoxy waterproofing membrane, paying particular attention to all corners, floor-to-wall junctions, and any pipe penetrations. We turn the membrane up the wall a minimum of 300mm above the floor and 100mm above the showerhead height. Corner tape is embedded at all junctions. After a full cure period, new tiles are fixed over the waterproofed substrate. For new showers, we waterproof before tiling.
